Readers, Len also wrote me a nice email, which I’ll quote here and then comment on.

David, I’ve been thinking about the line you quoted from the Amazon
TOS for blogs. On the one hand, it seems reasonable that I would be
granting a right and license to distribute my blog without
restrictions, because that’s the purpose of making my blog available
on that platform. But I wonder if you are seeing a risk that I’ve
missed. For instance, if someone wanted to publish my blog (I just
saw Julia and Juliet last night, which maybe got me thinking about
this). Would my granting of these rights to Amazon preclude publishing
I might want to do later. It does not seem that I am giving away my
rights to my writing.

I’d be interested in more of what led you to find that language “a
dealbreaker.”

Thanks again, Len, for an interesting session at podcamp. To the best of my knowledge, the “non-exclusive” part means that we grant Amazon the right to distribute our blog without impairing our right to give others that right or to retain it ourselves. So we could then sign a similar agreement with somebody else as long as that agreement is not exclusive.

What tripped my wire was the “irrevocable” part. It looks to my un-JD’d eye that this word means that I can never undo what this agreement does. If one day I decide that I want to sell my blog in a different store or take it off the market entirely, it appears to me that this wording would allow Amazon to keep distributing it anyway.

Weighed against the possibility of double-digit annual earnings, I figured that risk was too high. Maybe I’m missing the boat, time will tell.

Read more comments by limeduck

You can bet that I’ll post updates as I learn more about the properties of scrabble sets in the wild.

While I agree that the decay isn’t likely to be linear, I think the shape of the curve will go the other way, at least at the end: as a set gets more visibly compromised, it’s more likely to be completely discarded or raided by people who figure it’s already useless - scavengers looking to repair their own sets or crafty hipsters looking to make cufflinks from their initials in scrabble tiles.

Read more comments by limeduck

Farmers market marketing dos and don’ts

Hi Cathy, and thanks for the comment. It’s good to know somebody is thinking about buying local food.

I’m assuming (and we all know where that can get us) that the owners of these small farm businesses want to grow them. I don’t really mean that they want to get huge and turn into factories, but that they want to live well and send their kids to good schools. If that’s true, then I really believe they should invest in at least the bare minimum of marketing - something with their information on it that you and I can take (or not take) that will help us spread the word about these businesses, which we both really want to succeed and continue to offer us great stuff. Both my purchases last week were given to me in plain white paper bags, which I recycled. I’m thinking a rubber stamp or sticker would be a small addition that would be just as recyclable.

It’s Wednesday again, what will you buy at the Davis Sq farm market today?

PS folks interested in learning more about the economics of running a small farm business might want to visit the Federation of MA Farmers Markets http://www.massfarmersmarkets.org/ or Julia Shanks Food Consulting http://www.juliashanks.com/

Read more comments by limeduck

The state of the twitter economy

Hi Lynne

You may be a member of a growing class of Twitter users, the silent tweetjority, if you will. It turns out you can learn a lot from Twitter without tweeting, such as your business intelligence project. In fact, you can do most if not all of that stuff without even joining Twitter. You’re also on the verge of discovering the dirty truth about the follower economy: many people (and robots too) follow you only in the hope of being followed back. It’s the circle of jerk, if you know what I mean.

Recent turgid research by Harvard Business School http://blogs.harvardbusiness.org/cs/2009/06/new_twitter_research_men_follo.html has some sexy info about gender differences but for me the headline of note is this buried lede:

Among Twitter users, the median number of lifetime tweets per user is one.

Hmm.

Read more comments by limeduck
